Susan McGalla – Prominent Businesswoman

Susan McGalla is a successful businesswoman on about.me who was born in East Liverpool, Ohio. She earned a Bachelor’s degree from Mount Union College. Ms. McGalla began working for the Joseph Horne Company in 1986, and stayed there until 1994, when she started at American Eagle Outfitters. Susan entered American Eagle as a Divisional Merchandise Buyer for women’s clothing. She maneuvered her way through a number of management positions until achieving becoming President and Chief Merchandising Officer in 2007. Ms. Susan McGalla founded P3 Executive Consulting, LLC in 2013, which is a top-tier business consulting company. Earlier this year, she was offered the role of Director of Strategic Planning and Growth for the Pittsburgh Steelers, which she accepted. Ms. McGalla has some experience in academia, as well, serving as Trustee at the University of Pittsburg from 2009 to today.

Susan McGalla was entrusted with tremendous responsibility at American Eagle Outfitters, which consisted of four brands and yearly revenues of over three billion dollars. In 1996, two years after Susan McGalla began working at AEO, she assumed the position of Divisional Merchandise Manager of women’s clothing. A year later, she began serving as Vice President. In 2003, Ms. McGalla earned the title of Executive Vice President. Two years later, Susan reached the then-pinnacle of her career by assuming the role of President and Chief Merchandising Officer of the American Eagle Brand, two titles she held until 2007.

Susan McGalla holds nothing short of an astounding career. She is an astute businessperson, whose rise to success was made more difficult due to gender inequality. Gender roles in the United States are becoming increasingly less differentiated, but executive business positions are still highly populated by men. Today, overcoming the ‘gender gap’ in competing for executive positions proves to be a tough task, but is considerably less difficult than it was ten or twenty years ago. Ms. McGalla prides herself in never “[playing] the woman card,” which can seem like a viable option to some women trying to find traction.

Ms. Susan McGalla is an excellent example of a successful businesswoman for young, aspiring, businesswoman (and businessmen) can look up to. Ms. McGalla occasionally speaks to female audiences, such as the Women and Girl’s Foundation of Pittsburgh. The majority of her time is allocated to P3 Executive Consulting and the Pittsburgh Steelers, although she does speak to audiences from time to time (most of which are female-oriented).
